Simplifying the complexity of cloud recovery

Things are speeding up this week as we move on to the often more advanced and complex cloud recovery.

COMMON CLOUD DISASTER RECOVERY CHALLENGES

Problem:  “I thought moving applications to the cloud would mean my resilience would increase, but it’s just more complicated.”

Advice: There are resilience benefits to operating in the cloud but resilience does not happen automatically and you can’t assume a service to be 100% resilient against outages. Effective disaster recovery strategies and plans are still needed.

Problem:  “I have both on-premises and cloud workloads. I thought my on-premises disaster recovery plans would just convert over, but it doesn’t seem to be the case.”

Advice: Moving from traditional disaster recovery to cloud disaster recovery can be complex so it’s essential to build out a comprehensive plan to ensure you have the right processes in place. It starts with defining application tiers, building plans and then enhancing them.

Problem:  “My applications are spread across multiple availability zones, I’m struggling to keep track of how they are connected and the impact during recovery.”

Advice: Cloud-based applications frequently rely on various cloud services, such as databases, message queues, and content delivery networks (CDNs). Recovering these applications involves ensuring the availability and consistency of these integrated services during the recovery process. While it’s important to have a comprehensive cloud disaster recovery plan for each application, some will be higher priority for recovery than others, so you will also need to consider what order to recover in and the interdependencies between various applications and systems.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

⛈️ Cloud has many advantages but it can also add complexity.

❌ On-premises disaster recovery plans don’t necessarily translate for cloud recovery.

⚖️ While many organizations focus on cloud resilience, recovery is still essential and understanding the shared responsibility model with your cloud provider is a must.
